This is a callable function.

What it does

A field's value written so the pair it belongs to can be read back.

A value with nothing in it to confuse a reader is written bare, which is most

of them and keeps a line short. A value that is empty, or that carries a

space, a quote, or an equals sign, is quoted, because otherwise

note=see below reads as a field note and a stray word. A value carrying a

line break is quoted and the break written as an escape, so one line of

output stays one line of output.
