What it does

Whether a stop has been asked for.

Asking costs a read, so this belongs at the top of a loop, between one unit

of work and the next — which is exactly where a program is able to stop

cleanly. It never becomes false again: a request once made stands, and a

program that resumed after being asked to stop would simply be killed a

moment later.
